Using either given Cryptofree config file with linux mint's network manager gives me the error "The file 'cryptofree_linux-udp.ovpn' could not be read or does not contain recognized VPN connection information

Error: the plugin does not support import capability."

Try this: open the file in a text editor, and remove the <remote></remote> tags. See if that works. By the way, which version of Linux Mint are you using?
