Default port forwarding
Default port forwarding
Hello,
I know it's possible to forward ports manually (e.g. 38999 for a torrent client) but I've found that ports up until 30 000 are open according to port scanning software and netcat.
Does this mean that I can just use 8999 as a port for torrenting without the need to manually forward the port?
Thanks,
Oriman

@OP
Are you talking about port forwarding in general or specifically doing it on a Cryptostorm exit node?

Re: Default port forwarding
I do a lot of P2P file transfers. I've tried turning on port-forwarding, but in my torrent client, I've noticed that my real IP address as well as the address of the VPN server is included in the list of IPs that I am connected to.
I used your Torrent-tip tool, and it only shows the IP of the VPN server I am connected to.
Pardon me for being a little bit paranoid, but could you give me some reassurance that my real IP address isn't being broadcast somehow as part of the Torrent swarm?

Does your real IP show if port-forwarding is disabled? How are you enabling port forwarding?

Re: Default port forwarding
No.
By going to: https://cryptostorm.is/portfwd and following the instructions there.
If port-forwarding is turned-on, my VPN IP is shown directly above my real IP address, both showing the same port in use in my torrent client.
If I go to: https://cryptostorm.is/torrentip, it only shows the VPN IP.
I just want to make sure I'm not leaking my real IP address.

Which torrent client are you using? Could you experiment with another one to see if the issue appears there as well?

What IP site are you using? I'm curious to check mine.Main Sequence wrote: ↑Fri Feb 14, 2020 1:54 amIf port-forwarding is turned-on, my VPN IP is shown directly above my real IP address, both showing the same port in use in my torrent client.

Deluge.
I downloaded and tried qBittorrent as well. Got the same results, unfortunately -- both my VPN address and my real IP address were shown in the swarm.

There are other sites that you can use, but express vpn's does not put any limitations on the number of times you can access it, nor do they require you to register to use it, unlike sites such as whatismyip.com.
Re: Default port forwarding
Tks for the site, looks like I'm not experiencing the same IP exposure. I've only recently discovered the port-forward function but I'm not sure it makes much difference to my use.
It could be that my new telco-supplied modem is too basic and I disabled UPnP when I got it. I just enabled it after pausing some QBt and started them again, refreshing the UPnP screen showed nothing, refreshing the expressvpn page still showed just my CS IP.
How are you seeing both your CS IP and your real IP in a swarm, by looking at another client on the same torrent?

Can you check your router to see if UPnP is enabled on it? If so switch it off and also disable it in your torrent client.

Re: Default port forwarding
With port-forwarding enabled, both IP addresses show up in the swarm, using the same randomly-generated port number. This has happened with two torrent clients, Deluge and qBittorrent, as long as port-forwarding is enabled.MOQ888 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 16, 2020 3:27 pmTks for the site, looks like I'm not experiencing the same IP exposure. Re: Default port forwarding
UPnP is disabled in both torrent clients, and UPnP is DISABLED on my router.
So far, I've solved the issue by simply not using port-forwarding.

Just to clarify, is this error showing up during leeching, seeding or both?

Re: Default port forwarding
Definitely during leeching; I'm not so sure about seeding.
Naturally, I haven't wanted to seed with port-forwarding on, due to the potential of an ip address leak.
I'll try a few more experiments, and report back.

Re: Default port forwarding
Did some more downloads with port-forwarding turned on; my IP address does not show up when seeding, however, it is definitely there when leeching.
