GLENDALE Jean-Gabriel Pageau Jersey , Ariz. (AP) — Shane Doan holds numerous franchise records, was the epitome of what a captain should be and led the Arizona Coyotes on their deepest playoff run. Those accomplishments only tell part of the story of how he became one of the most revered athletes in Arizona history.Humble to a fault. Deeply connected to the community. Loyal. Generous with his time, whether it was for a cause, casually chatting with a fan or media inquiries following a difficult loss. Always the hardest-working player on the team.Perhaps more than any of it, a good person.“I don’t know a better human being on this planet. I really don’t,” said Tyson Nash, Doan’s former teammate and current Coyotes TV analyst. “He is everything that you want to be and more. I want my kid to be like him. I want to be like him.”The Coyotes will celebrate Doan’s career by retiring his No. 19 jersey during a pregame ceremony before Sunday’s game against Winnipeg. The guest list will include NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, multiple former Coyotes teammates, friends and family. The Coyotes and the Jets will wear “Doan No. 19” on the warmup jerseys prior to the game and fans will receive a Doan bobblehead.“That’s the part that I’m really excited about: to get to share it with the fans here in Arizona and to have friends and family around for it,” Doan said. “It’s something that you never, ever dream of and to get to experience it is pretty amazing.”From Halkirk, Alberta, Doan was the seventh overall pick of the 1995 NHL draft by the Winnipeg Jets and came with the franchise when moved to the desert to become the Phoenix Coyotes.Doan guided the Coyotes through four years of uncertainty while the franchise was operated by the NHL and led them to the 2012 Western Conference Finals. He earned the King Clancy Memorial Trophy for leadership on and off the ice in 2010, and took home the Mark Messier Leadership Award in 2012.Doan retired in 2017 as Arizona’s career leader in games (1,540), goals (402), assists (570), points (972), game-winning goals (69) and power-play goals (128).He spent his entire 21-year career with the organization, spurning chances for a better chances to win the Stanley Cup out of loyalty for the NHL team that drafted him.“There’s no player in our team history that meant more to this franchise than Shane Mark Stone Jersey , and no player our franchise history that has meant more to this community than Shane,” Coyotes president and CEO Ahron Cohen said. “So it was a pretty easy decision.”At 6-foot-1, 223 pounds, Doan played with a combination of power and finesse. He also was driven to wring the most from his talent, always the last person off the ice after practice, huffing and puffing while dripping sweat after getting in a few extra laps or tipped shots.“This is a guy who spent 21 years in the NHL and his last year he was still out there,” Nash said. “He was always working on the nuances of his game to get better. It was remarkable, but that’s what good pros do, they try to get better every day.”Nash has known Doan since he was nine when he visited the Doan family’s Christian summer camp for kids at their ranch. The pair met up again eight years later as teammates in the Western Hockey League and were Coyotes together from 2003-06.Through the years of their friendship, Nash has seen first-hand Doan’s generosity, from taking the extra time to talk with fans after a game or give back to the community. He’s also seen the competitive side of Doan that raged anytime anything was on the line.Playing hockey, cards on the team plane, golf, wrestling in the basement, Doan wanted to win no matter what, his eyes widening into a maniacal look that belied his easygoing nature away from competition.“He’d take out his grandma to win at something,” Nash said. “The guy just never wanted to lose and if you beat him at something, you better be ready to go 10 rounds or whatever because he was going to get redemption. The Coyotes have a ring of honor that includes Keith Tkachuk, Jeremy Roenick and Teppo Numminen of the Coyotes, and Bobby Hull Youth Matt Duchene Jersey , Thomas Steen and Dale Hawerchuk of the original Jets.Doan, fittingly, will be the first player to have his number retired by the franchise.“Unexpected, maybe a little uncomfortable,” Doan said. “At the same time, so excited to have so many people coming, people that are close to me. It’s going to be so much fun.” CHICAGO (AP) — Duncan Keith is a two-time Norris Trophy winner because of his defense, not his scoring skills. This night was different. When the Blackhawks needed it most, Keith played the role of power forward perfectly Sunday. The veteran defenseman’s goal 1:23 into overtime gave Chicago a 2-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche in a matchup of Western Conference playoff contenders.Keith took a feed from Brandon Saad, bulled his way down left wing, shrugged off a check from Nathan MacKinnon and beat goaltender Philipp Grubauer between the legs to snap the Blackhawks’ three-game losing streak.“I don’t score too many overtime goals but I think MacKinnon was coming down and I was trying not to get embarrassed there because he’s a pretty good player,” Keith said. “I had the jump on him so I was trying to maybe pull it to my backhand. I saw that I wasn’t going to have enough room so I just tried to slam it at the net as hard I could.”Chicago pulled within five points of Colorado for the second wild card in the West, one night after the Avalanche beat the Blackhawks in the first game of their home-and-home set.“It was pretty much a must-win game, especially after losing the last one against these guys,” Keith said.Artem Anisimov had a power-play goal for the Blackhawks, tying it 1-all early in the third period. Corey Crawford made 19 saves.Alexander Kerfoot scored on a 5-on-3 power play for the Avalanche, who had won four straight.“It was really important, especially against that team,” Anisimov said. “They’re ahead of us. Got to get that extra point. There’s not much time left so every game’s important, but we just go one by one.”Colorado has 81 points in the final wild-card spot. Arizona and Minnesota have 79 Mike Condon Jersey , and Chicago has 76, with a game in hand on Colorado and Minnesota. For the Avalanche, it was a squandered chance to put more distance between them and their pursuers.“I don’t want to blow this one too much out of proportion,” coach Jared Bednar said. “I know our guys are tired tonight, and I know it’s no excuse, because they played back-to-back as well, but we’ve been on a busy stretch and running some guys for some hard minutes.“It wasn’t our best performance. We’ll get rid of this game and get ready for our next one. You’ve got to be on top of your game, and we learned that here tonight.”Kerfoot opened the scoring with Colorado’s second 5-on-3 goal in two games. He deflected Tyson Barrie’s slap shot past Crawford with 4:34 left in the second period while Marcus Kruger and Jonathan Toews were in the penalty box.Chicago tied it on Anisimov’s goal 1:44 into the third. Anisimov moved to the slot after winning the faceoff from Carl Soderberg and deflected Brent Seabrook’s slap shot from the point past Grubauer. It was Chicago’s second power-play goal in 11 games.Chicago coach Jeremy Colliton was as much relieved as anything.“We’re in a spot where we’re desperate. You can respond in different ways to that and I really liked how we responded tonight,” Colliton said. “We found a different level, a lot of pressure on the puck, forced them to play D-zone. We defended really well.”The Avalanche controlled play early, with Sven Andrighetto hitting the post 65 seconds in, but the Blackhawks gradually took over. They forced Grubauer to make 40 stops, including a brilliant glove save on Toews with 3:26 remaining in regulation.Colorado didn’t get a shot in overtime. The Avalanche controlled play for the first 50 seconds, but Chicago took control of the puck after a battle on the boards and it eventually came to Saad, who found Keith open on the left side.NOTES: Colorado is 11-5-2 in its last 18 games. … Chicago is 9-7-1 in its past 17 after going 10-2 to climb into the playoff race. … Colorado LW Gabriel Landeskog (upper body) missed his eighth straight game. … Chicago C Drake Caggiula (concussion) missed his 11th consecutive game. … Chicago juggled its line combinations, putting a slumping Alex DeBrincat back with Toews and Patrick Kane. They combined for 15 shots but no points.UP NEXTAvalanche: Host the Vegas Golden Knights on Wednesday night.Blackhawks: At the Arizona Coyotes on Tuesday night.
