Nodes down + Speed problems

Hi,
I noticed the Düsseldorf node doesn't work. After connecting with wireguard only the sent bytes count up but received bytes stay at zero.

And other nodes that work like Netherlands and Frankfurt are very slow, the download speed is limited to roughly 10 Mbit/s
The upload works though, I get 25-30 (~32 is my connection maximum)

Let's see what the next canary (tomorrow) says

only 192.168.178.0/23 I can access LAN but no internet. (although every LAN devices is from 192.168.178.x)

If you have a native IRC client, you can hop onto IRC at irc.cryptostorm.is, port 6697 (SSL) or 6667 (non-SSL).

Well, when trying to connect with SSL, I get the error "error: certificate issuer of the remote host unknown/not recognized"

Whitelist / access LAN IP addresses with Wireguard

Hello,
can someone please tell me how to whitelist IPs and therefore devices in my LAN when using wireguard?
As soon as I am using wireguard I can't access my phone via airdroid, or my Set-Top-Box via LAN for example.

I tried putting my LAN as 192.168.2.0/24 in the line of "Allowed IPs = ..." in the config, but that didn't work.

Re: Can't create Wireguard keys with Windows Subsystem for Linux

To give others a clue, I solved it like this:
Here you can see that you can change the default user to root with the command

Code: Select all

C:\> ubuntu config --default-user root
from the windows cmd console before you use the linux subsystem.

Remember to change it back to the regular user afterwards ("barebone" in my screenshot).

I think the reason why I can't use the command "su" from the user barebone is that initially there is no password set for the root user. I get the error: "su: authentication failure" And it won't accept the empty password

Found out it is because in Ubuntu on default root is disabled.

Nonetheless, I got it to work with that command mentioned in the beginning.

EDIT: Oh, and I just found out that if su doesn't work I can use "sudo bash" and suddenly I am "root"

Can't create Wireguard keys with Windows Subsystem for Linux

Hi,

I wanted to try out wireguard on Windows and Android. To get my configs I want to use the script that is mentioned in the tutorial.
I, therefore, activated the Windows Subsystem for Linux and installed Ubuntu from the Microsoft store.
I successfully installed the wireguard package into the subsystem. As can be seen on the screenshot (wg bin shows the help text)

But I can't create my key as you can see. But umask works.

Re: IPLeak.net broken?

May I add:
IPleak.net works for me, when connected to CS it shows me the correct DNS IP of CS.
And also the IPV6 test fails due to timeout, that's ok. (so my public IPv6 isn't going through the VPN).
Also, https://browserleaks.com/webrtc doesn't give any IP information at all since I set "media.peerconnection.ice.default_address_only"and "media.peerconnection.ice.no_host" to true via uBlock Origin's WebRTC protection.

BUT: It bothers me, that on https://ipv6-test.com/ I can still see my IPV6-IP and geolocation (country +rough location) and ISP name. Why is that?

PS: On my android though ipv6-test.com just shows "IPv6 not supported"

Correct, until I set the mssfix option in the config with a lower value than 1413.

I looked at my Windows PC setting and it looks altered (lowered to 1440).
So on windows, MTU should stay at 1500 for ethernet?

Look at my attached screenshot: "Ethernet 2" is a TAP interface and "Ethernet" is my actually NIC connected to the router.

MTU value, DSL+LTE hybrid connection (UDP/TCP)

Hi,
I can't use UDP connections, I can connect but websites don't load. TCP works, though.
I think this has to do with my ISP that uses a hybrid or bonding of DSL and LTE.

I found in the router menu varying MTU values.
1500 for ethernet
1492 for DSL
and 1436 for LTE
I guess the DSL and LTE MTUs are WAN-facing.

I also found under the IPv6-settings of the router an MTU of 1440.

I'm not sure which of these MTU values is valid and the one important to my problem. (in forums they even say MTU for LTE is 1500 since 2017 firmware of the router. And because of mss clamping the MTU of the bonded connection is set to the lower one of DSL and LTE. That's 1492. In case the values I listed above are correct, maybe in the meantime since 2017 the values would have changed again. So that would mean now with clamping of 1492 and 1436, the router would use 1436 currently).

When not connected to a VPN using the mtupath tool by IEA Software Inc. or the windows command "ping -f -l [MTU]" I get a suggested MSS of 1412.
This means the tool and ping command both use UDP for testing IPv4, right? 1440 minus 20 for IPv4 minus 8 for UDP = 1412
I don't understand why mtupath tells me MSS is 1412 and MTU 1440, but 1440 is listed in the router settings under IPv6 settings and not in general or IPv4 settings.

Moving on: I put mssfix 1412 into my UDP-config (*.ovpn). Now I can use the VPN connections and websites load.

Now I don't understand why (when connected to the VPN with mssfix 1412) when I use mtupath or the ping command I get a suggested MSS of 1472 and MTU of 1500. :?:
Why is it now higher, although it is lowered with the mssfix 1412 option in the *.OVPN conf?

Re: widget v3

So it seems this must be an MTU problem that is only present when using UDP.
I found out that the MTU of my router is 1440 for the bonding tunnel of the DSL+LTE connection.
Minus 28 for UDP should be a link mtu of 1412 and a tunnnel MTU or tun-mtu of 1362.

If I edit the OVPN config file and enter tun-mtu=1362 internet works on my android. (or enter 1362 in the tunnel mtu field of the GUI of Anre Schwabe's app).

But how can I edit the inbuilt configs of the widget to use a different MTU than default?

Thanks.

I got a problem though.
When using UDP I can't browse any site, it hangs there on "TLS handshake with www.12324.com ..." in the browser status line.
Doesn't matter which server or ECC cuve. Also tried different ports, doesn't matter, it does not work with UDP.
When switching to TCP I can browse the web.

What can I do? WHy does UDP not work? I'm on Windows 10, no firewall insalled except the win10 integrated one.

Re: Android-settings import failed

One step closer.
It seems the error happens because inside the ovpn file I can see HTMl code, that doesn't seem correct.
So when I try to save the OVPN file from github with "save destination as" as *.ovpn it somehow maybe saves the whole page that is behind that link?

EDIT: it seems to get the correct file version, you have to click on "raw" then go to save page as. And that saved ovpn file only contains the config without HTML.

And you write, that the subnode can be everywhere in the world. But how can I use geo-ip restricted services then, if the subnode is chosen randomly?

And using the domaintools website I get even more different IPs for it:

I am quite confused which is the corect IP and why 3 different searches return different IPs for the same DNS query.

Re: Exclude programs or websites from VPN connection?

Oh no!! I did a "route print" and saw, that the routes that I added yesterday aren't there any more, that may be the reason why it still doesn't work.

Why does it "forget" the added routes (after rebooting the PC I guess)?

Edit: Ok found something.
To make a static route persistent, you can either enter route add commands in a batch file that is run during system startup or use the -p option when adding routes.

Routes added by using the -p option are stored in the registry under the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip \Parameters\PersistentRoutes

Re: Exclude programs or websites from VPN connection?

Thx for your help thus far.

I added those but got a new problem. I can't even get the form fields for login in the launcher now.

When I start the launcher I get these URLs recorded. I already added the two amazonaws IPs to the routing. (54.231.192.46, 54.231.192.48).
But it still doesn't show the login in form fields in the launcher. Are those pki google and symcb also needed to add as route? What do you think?

Can't ping Microsoft Live/Outlook Servers

Hi,
when using the CS VPN I can receive my Gmail or ISP-E-Mails via imap just fine.
But the Outlook email (hotmail/live mail) doesn't work.

I can log in on the outlook website just fine. But using imap with Thunderbrid doesn't work.

When I do a ping to imap-mail.outlook.com I also get a 100% packet loss.

Why is that?

Code: Select all

C:\Windows\System32>ping imap-mail.outlook.com

Ping wird ausgeführt für imap.glbdns2.microsoft.com [65.55.174.170] mit 32 Bytes Daten:
Zeitüberschreitung der Anforderung.
Zeitüberschreitung der Anforderung.
Zeitüberschreitung der Anforderung.

Ping-Statistik für 65.55.174.170:
    Pakete: Gesendet = 4, Empfangen = 0, Verloren = 4
    (100% Verlust),

Re: Exclude programs or websites from VPN connection?

I tried it with Vindictus.
I added 4 IPs, that I found out with UrlSnooper2.
Now the login windows shows the form fields, when connected to the VPN, which it didn't before.
But after waiting some time, I get an auth error and the game doesn't start yet.

Ok I didn't exclude the hackshield IP yet.

But I have a problem there.

I still must exclude patch.nexoneu.com and hackshield.nexoneu.com
But doing a nslookup either in CMD.exe or with online tools reveals that the full domain is patch.nexoneu.com.edgesuite.net and patch.nexoneu.com.edgesuite.net

And those reveal different IPs every time. How should I proceed?

Exclude programs or websites from VPN connection?

Hi, is it possible to exclude programs or websites from using the VPN connection?

I ask this because I want to play Tera. I am used to have my CS connection enabled all the time. But if I try to log in my Tera account on their website I get banned for 24 hrs.
They say, VPN/Proxy etc. isn't allowed according to their ToS.

But I don't agree that I have to shut down my VPN while playing Tera and other services in Windows or my mail client etc. access the web without VPN while I play Tera.

So here is the question again, can I somehow exclude the Tera client from using the VPN? Or can I exclude the Tera webpage from using the VPN connection?

Re: streaming video choppy (Youtube/Twitch/...)

And it's bad again.
This time, twitch.
Connected through Paris/France node.

I can only view 5 seconds, then it buffers 10 seconds.
Or it plays 10 seconds and it buffers for 20 seconds.
See..it buffers twice as long as it plays.

Monitoring download bandwidth gives only 500kbit/s to 1Mbit/s for this twitch stream. (i tried it without vpn connection and it gets up to 2,3 mbit/s)

Re: streaming video choppy (Youtube/Twitch/...)

Lol, no.
I often open 3-5 videos in tabs that I'm gonna watch. But due to a plugin they will at least pause and only one video is playing at a time. (although the other videos may buffer a tiny bit at the beginning in pause mode).

Right now, steaming video seems to work quite ok. I will observe that a bit. And when I have big trouble again, like I did when creating the OP, I will respond again in this thread.

Lastly, as a workaround for video streaming problems, I have found using the youtube-dl and Clipgrab utilities to download the video for local playback a real frustration reducer.
Yeah I thought so as well. And it also plays more smoothly in VLC, then with Flash in Firefox.

The menu is structured not like you told me. But I found the option under "engine". So I entered the port there after selecting TCP.

Re: streaming video choppy (Youtube/Twitch/...)

So I just monitored it while using the Frankfurt node (which was the best performing one for me for a long time).
But in the last weeks I have a lot of trouble with Frankfurt.

Could that be due to a 45% packet loss in de-cix?
It was 45% initially but after 5 minutes went down to 35%

So I made what you told me. That Ip is from a Youtube server, but this time it wasn't as bad as last time. I will do another test when I get a bad connection again. Maybe because I used the France node. I will retry with the Frankfurt node.

The latency on the top right that shows 177ms was 229ms initially.

streaming video choppy (Youtube/Twitch/...)

Hi,
essentially streaming sites like Youtube, Twitch don't work. They are choppy because the rebuffer every now an then. I tried different nodes, Frankfurt, Paris, Lisbon. All the same problem.

My solution is to not use Cryptostorm and disconnect from the darknet while watching online video. After that reconnect. That is a very bad solution imo.
But that,s the only possible solution that I Know. Theoretically when using Cryptostorm nodes they transmit data as well and the throughput is quite ok too. But the constant query of data with the associated ping duration slows things down, so that it isn't fast enough to rebuffer before the video gets choppy or pauses.

Frankfurt node is very picky since yesterday. Every 15-20 minutes I have massive timeouts for about 2 minutes and then it mostly gets back to normal.
When the timeouts while browsing appear, I made ping tests.
Pinging the LAN-router is 1ms.
Pinging my own External IP: 46.165.222.245 gives ~55ms
But pinging goolge.de for example gives timeout.

And this are the results with my 11mbit/s capable connection:

With the geographically closest node (Frankfurt) I get this:
Why do I only get 1/3 of my possible download speed (11mbit/s) ?

Image

Watching Youtube is even worse, there I only get 2 Mbit/s of the measured 4,4Mbit/s. And 720p Videos buffer a lot, so I can only watch 10 seconds, then have to wait about 1 minute till it continues to play another 10 seconds.

Well the problem started around 20 to 21 o clock.
And now at 23:30, the problem was solved for maybe 5 minutes. The ping with connection to the Frankfurt node was 65ms and I could download with nearly 11 Mbit/s as well.
But after 5 minutes again the speed is max. 3,5 Mbit/s (although the ping is better then in my first report, 75ms).

Hi,
this evening the frankfurt node is very slow.

Youtube barely loads and can't buffer enough to stream smoothly.
And when doing a speedtest I only get 210-230ms ping and max. 2,5 Mbit/s
When don't using cryptostorm VPN I get 47ms ping and 10,8MBit/s download speed.

Can you confirm, that the Frankfurt node is bad right now?

You go into the app, hit the three dots on the top right and press "change Vpn settings", switch to "server list". There you can turn random server on or off (the switch on top). And edit the servers as well turn individual server entries on and off.

Re: Android "waiting for server reply"

So.
I had the issue that connecting takes a very long time. Every time it says "cannot resolve host", then after a while it says "time out tls error". Then after that it reconnects and says "cannot resolve host". And after some tries it says "waiting for server reply". Stays there for a while and finally connects.
So connecting takes many tries and sometimes up to 5 minutes.

I completely got rid of all 3 error messages and can connect in very few seconds if I change the config.

The problematic config was
:
"on connect, chose from server entries randomly" was set to on. and the 5 possible entries where set to: raw-balancer-dynamic.cryptostorm.net, raw-balancer-dynamic.cryptostorm.ch, raw-balancer-dynamic.cryptokens.ca, raw-balancer-dynamic.cstorm.pw, raw-balancer-dynamic.cryptostorm.nu

The config that connects rapidly without errors
:
"on connect, chose from server entries randomly" set to off. And only enable one entry. Enter one distinct node into that form field. for example frankfurt-linux.cstorm.pw

Like I said, that gets rid of the "cannot resolve host address" message and also gets rid of the long waiting time leading to timeout:tls error.

I'd really like that a staff member could comment on that behavior!
Is there a problem with using the balancer on android with "openVpn for android 0.6.29"?

I got blocked on twitch

Hi,
I just got blocked on twitch.
I got this message:
You have been blocked from using Twitch. Please visit the Support Center for more information on why you may have been banned.
I was connected with this IP 76.164.234.13 when I got the message.

Their FAQ says this:
Note: If you are connecting from an open Proxy, it may show you that you have been blocked from using Twitch. Many open proxies have been blocked due to users abusing our Terms of Service from these proxies. We will not unblock these proxies from our site. It is recommended you do not use these services to connect to Twitch.
So what can I do, continue using twitch as a user? (I don't stream, just watch).

Re: node connecting to wrong nodes

Although my Narwhal client doesn't give me the xxx.xxx.xxx.248 IP that you linked, but 46.165.222.245.The latter still is in Germany.

Re: node connecting to wrong nodes

Hi,
I notice If I connect to the Frankfurt note with the windows widget (Nahrwahl 2.2), Google always uses Google.nl instead of google.de

Re: (Europe) CryptoStorm's Next Top...Exit

No, I only have been watching Wilmaa via Proxies. And used the Wilma Free channels.
With all the channels you mean the paid channels I guess.

Praise/compliment for Cryptostorm team

Hi,
I just wanted to thank the team behind Cryptostorm for their work.
I am glad I someone in a VPN deal thread mentioned you.
So I checked your website and was immediately convinced by the token auth model.
I feel to be in good hands, I think that you know your stuff.

Some of the offers like the new deepDNS thing are above my level of knowledge, but there are some well written threads (like the one explaining the token based auth or the superfishing-Lenovo topic).

I like how you guys tick, and how you made the new website.

It gets a bit bootlickerish now, but I'm just happy to feel a bit safer again in the internet.

Re: (Europe) CryptoStorm's Next Top...Exit

I don't know if it is possible, but a Swiss node would be convenient for Wilmaa TV etc. (that's more a comfort than security point of view).

Re: Youtube can't run smoothly

Again, I have trouble.
When connected to the Paris or UK node I can't watch youtube, because I only get 2mBit/s max.

Even if I connect to the geographically closet node (Germany) (which has been the best over-all-performing node in general) I only get 3-4Mbit/s on average when watching a 720p Video. That isn't enough, I get a couple of re-bufferings.

But if I don't use cryptostorm VPN when watching a 720p video, I get 7 Mbit/s on average and 11Mbit/s as spikes (11Mbits/ is the max my DSL connection supports). With that speed no re-buffering occurs.

don't use dns, and use TCP?

Hi,
I have a problem on Android.
Can you tell me a way to get rid of the waiting for DNS message and "resolve: cannot resolve host address" in the log file?
I want to use direct ips.
I don't want to wait 2-3 minute till it finally connects and in the meanwhile all mail etc. was synced without VPN.

And the 2nd thing:
I have two Wlan Access Points. When I move between those 2 APs the VPN connection drops and takes minutes to reconnect.
So I changed the SSIDs and made a combined WLAN between those two AP, I gave both APs the same SSID.
But still the VPN connection drops.
In the log I can see that the UDP connection drops.
Can I make the VPN work as continuous as the WLan itself, when walking around between those two APs?
Maybe if I use TCP instead of UDP?

Re: Youtube can't run smoothly

It is really bad again.
8pm,
and without VPN it loads 2-3 times with 1MB/s, then goes down and the video stops and rebuffers a lot. But the speed varies from 0,2MB/s to 1MB/s
When connected via VPN it buffers also a lot but varies from 0,05MB/s to 0,2MB/s only and never goes up to to 1MB/s.

(I talk about byte there, not bit)

Speedtest.net gives a 3,5MBit/s as result with VPN and 144ms ping. Without VPN I get ~6-8Mbit/s as result and 55ms ping (my connection usually gets 11mbit/s).
